Thankful Thursday

I am happy, and very Thankful to say that The Nut House has had a very quiet and uneventful week. It looks like we are finally getting back into our routine after our Christmas holiday.

I am Thankful that my children don't seem to mind the garbage bags of junk that have been leaving their bedroom and playroom. I am not sure if it is because they know there is no hope, or it is because they are hiding from me so I don't ask them to help out. Either way, the purging of junk is good!

I am ever so Thankful that the company that William works for has finally decided to pay him a HUGE portion of the thousands of dollars that is owed to him. There is still more to come, but this is something we have been waiting on for months. Happy Dance, Happy Dance!

I am Thankful for the Wii Fit. It is not the same as actually getting out of the house to go for a walk, or go to the gym to work out, but it is just what our family needs. The kids think they are getting a treat because they get to play Wii on a school night, and I get to work out. Good for the body, good for the soul, good for postpartum depression. (still trying to work out a weekly check in blog hop for other Wii Fit bloggy buddies)

I am Thankful that the power has stayed on long enough for me to get this post finished and hopefully I will be able to get a little bit of work done on the computer today. If not, there is always more junk to toss.

As always, I am Thankful for my happy, healthy, wild little beasties that run around my house all day long driving me crazy, I am Thankful that my husband has a job, we have a roof over our heads and for our wonderfully supportive group of friends and family and all the ways they help us.

So what are you Thankful for today? It is so easy to join in and tell everyone.

Here is how Thankful Thursdays works:

1. Post your Thankful Thoughts on your blog. Somewhere in your post please mention Welcome to the Nut House and http://ourhappynuthouse.blogspot.com/ so that your friends, family and visitors know where to find other Thankful Thoughts. You can also grab my Thankful Thursdays banner and link to that. Once you have done that you can come back here and add your post to MckLinky.

Not every one has a blog, so:

2. If you don't have a blog, you can leave a Thankful Thoughts comment in the comment section.

3. You can show your Thankful Thoughts any way you like, as a list, as a story, as one word, one sentence or just a picture.

Have fun!

Thankful Thursdays

This has been an interesting week!

This past weekend was spent priming the bedrooms in our addition to get ready to paint. Very exciting! I am so Thankful that we have gotten to the point where we can start to paint. That means we are one step closer to tearing down the wall in the back of the house and moving in. We got a couple of really great deals for the addition too. Will and I went to Lowes, which sometimes can be a bad thing...meaning that when we go together, we usually end up spending money we don't have. Our latest trip was no exception. We couldn't decide if we were going to carpet the kids bedrooms or use laminate flooring. We found some nice, hickory laminate that was clearanced. One thing I learned about Lowes is that if you ask for a manager and ask for more of a discount on clearanced items, most likely you are going to get it. We walked out of Lowes with 40 boxes of beautiful laminate and saved over $400 off of the already clearanced price! That is not just awesome, it is beyond awesome, in fact it is beawesome! I suppose the down side of all of this is that while we have it in our possession after flashing the credit card at the cashier, we don't actually have any way to pay for it. But hey, live wild and be free, right?

Continuing with the addition, my mother-in-law came over Sunday morning to take the 3 oldest Nuts for a day out with Grandma Nut and mentioned that Home Depot was having a sale on paint. So we decided to live dangerously again and with the last of our Christmas cash from my MIL, we went off to the Homey together. Things could have gotten out of hand very quickly...this time of year is clearance time at the Home Improvement type stores and walking out of one of those places without a major purchase is about as hard for me as walking out of the grocery store without groceries. But we managed to get out alive, even after wandering around the bathroom section looking at tubs and vanities. In the end, we got some ceiling paint, primer and colors for all 4 bedrooms. We walked away with $370 worth of paint for for $180!! Actually we paid $260 for it all, but have $80 worth of rebates to fill out and send in. My big project for the weekend is filling out the rebates and getting them in the mail. I love getting deals like this, I am so Thankful for great deals on paint.

We will also be finishing up priming the kids bedrooms upstairs this weekend too. I am just so excited I could burst!

I also have some interesting and baffling news about Wee Nut. Something very strange has happened this week and I am not quite sure how to explain it. That news belongs with the long awaited peds cardiology appointment update. I want to feel really excited about it, but since I can't quite figure it out, I am just trying to wait it out and see what happens. Of course, that post will take a bit more time than I have right now, so you will have to wait for it. Sorry.

I am Thankful to SunTrust Bank, Stellar One Bank, Woodbridge Bank (a bank at Walmart) and my children's pediatrician who have all allowed to let me leave Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Week brochures that I got from the Congenital Heart Information Network. My kid's pediatrician has a stack of stickers and Stellar One asked for a bunch of stickers to hand out to kids who's parents would prefer they not have lolly pops. I am so Thankful that my community is helping me to raise awareness for Congenital Heart Defects. The deadline is getting close, but if you want to order stickers from CHIN they are free.

As always, I am Thankful for my happy, healthy, wild little beasties that run around my house all day long driving me crazy, I am Thankful that my husband has a job, we have a roof over our heads and for our wonderfully supportive group of friends and family and all the ways they help us.

Get Fit with the Wii Fit

We got the Wii Fit for this past Christmas. We tried to get it last year but it was sold out everywhere, so my mom got it around August or September last year. I have to say I Love This Thing!!!

Really, I figured the kids would use it way more than I would, but I am so hooked on the Wii Fit that I have a hard time stepping away from it. I have a hard time telling the kids we have to stop for dinner. I have a hard time telling the kids we have to stop for bed. Really, Wii Fit is so much fun! And not only are we having tons of fun...my body hurts the next day. I mean really hurts, like I just spent the day at the gym...because there have been times we have played on the Wii Fit almost all day.

For all of the Heart Mamas out there, I know you understand what I mean when I say that we have been living in the CHD Bubble. No large gatherings of germy children...than means no library, no YMCA, no Discovery Museum, no playground or activity center at the mall. Nothing, we go nowhere. Wee Nut had his second surgery in October 2008 and we were in the Bubble for 8 months post op. We had a few glorious outings before we were told to go back into the Bubble because of H1N1. Even though we are on the high priority list, my kids have only had the first H1N1 shot. She Nut has her 6 month check up this week, so hopefully we will know better if they will be getting the second shot soon, but for now, still in the Bubble. And that is why I love the Wii Fit so much!!

I think that the Wii Fit is perfect for many different types of families, but for children with special needs, I think it is just the bee's knee's! And while I understand the need for socializing with children, I think it is a great tool for homeschoolers as well. We used to have the kids enrolled in swimming lessons, martial arts, tball, soccer, basketball, you name it. If the Y offered it, my kids took it. And I got to work out too while we were there. We had such a great time, we were all in great shape and as a family we all made wonderful friends. Granted, most of the friends we made were our "Y" friends because they came from all over town and not all of the kids when to my kids school. Now that we live in the Bubble, all of that is gone. And honestly, with this economy and the way our finances have been going for the last 6 months, there is no way we could afford all of that any more anyways. So the Wii Fit is our new way to work out as a family.

So I got to thinking, I know I am not the only one out there who has a Wii Fit. And I have also been reading how many of you have been doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. You are all doing so great with the Shred! Congrats on sticking with it. Now that I have gotten to know my Wii Fit and how it works, I am setting up goals and getting back into a regular workout schedule. I am looking for anyone who has the Wii Fit and wants to get serious about setting goals and sticking with them.

I am still in the beginning stages of getting a weekly check in and blog hop going, but if you want to join in let me know. I still haven't gotten a chance to do all of the workouts on the Wii Fit yet, so I am not sure if I am going to set up certain goals to work on as a group, or if we will just work together to support each other. I also can't decide if this will be set up for monthly goals, every 3 months or longer like 6 or 12 months, or if we will just go from week to week and report in.

Who is in? Any suggestions?

TMI Tuesday

I am sitting in here working on Wing Nut's homeschool lesson and Little Nut Nut is in the bathroom giving me a play by play of his experience of the potty. The size, the shape...he compares the shape to animals* lol and every last little drop in the pot. It is amazing that he can combine practicing his numbers with going potty, because he loudly counts as his poopy drops into the potty and then yells across the house to make sure that everyone has heard about his activity.

Funny, yes?!?

This addition of TMI Tuesday has been brought to you by the letters P and U and by the numbers 1-16.

* No animals have been harmed in the process of my son using the potty.

Thankful Thursday

This week is so easy to find things to be Thankful For. It is so hard to think of all the lost life in Haiti, and not think about how lucky I am to have my family safely with me today. I love my family and am so Thankful to have them.

She Nut is just so tired from all her playing.

She is also getting irritated from the flash.
"Just let me sleep mama!"

 Wee Nut Loves Elmo

Not sure what is cuter than babies playing with each other.

I ♥ New York. Go Yankees!
I love seeing all my kids together in pictures :)

As always, I am Thankful for my happy, healthy, wild little beasties that run around my house all day long driving me crazy, I am Thankful that my husband has a job, we have a roof over our heads and for our wonderfully supportive group of friends and family and all the ways they help us.

Not Me Monday

To start out the New Year, I decided that I would Not make any resolutions that I could Not keep. I did Not decide that I would start them last week as soon as E Nut went back to school. And I did Not make it through last week without getting anything done. And I am most definitely Not starting out another week without getting anything done. Nope, Not Me.

I did Not in any way curl up on the couch first thing last week after getting E Nut off to school and hang out with my kids watching PBS all day. I did Not tell Wing Nut that he could have a few extra days off from homeschool because I was too tired to teach him. I did Not completely avoid house work for most of last week and wish that it was still Christmas vacation. Nope, I would Never do anything like that.

I did Not fall down my front stairs at the bottom of my hill last week, twist my ankle as I fell into a pot hole at the bottom of the stairs and fall into the middle of the road. I did Not swing She Nut's car seat out in front of me so that she did not go tumbling off into some random direction and smash her head. She Nut's car seat in front of me was Not the only thing that kept me from face planting it on the street. And I did Not lay in the middle of the road in 20 degree weather whimpering in pain while the rest of my children sat in the van oblivious to my suffering. I did Not hop to the van with She Nut and drive E Nut to school wondering if I broke my ankle. And I did Not do any of this because E Nut was late for school AGAIN. Nope, I am Not that clumsy, Not Me. And it is Not still sore today.

My Christmas tree is Not still up in the corner of my dinning room, and there are Not any other Christmas decorations up around the house either. I would never leave my tree up until the middle of January. Nope, Not Me. And I have Not thought about hanging Hearts from it and calling it a Valentines Day tree. I would Never think of doing anything like that.

Finally, I did Not spend the afternoon playing Wii Fit with my children yesterday. And I am Not sore from trying to keep up with my kids, Not at all. I also did Not ignore the pain in my ankle just to have fun with my children. Not Me, I would never put my children's fun in front of my own suffering.

So what have you been Not doing lately? I would love to hear about it. And you can join in with everyone else who is Not doing things over at MckMama's blog.

How to Add a "Handwritten Signature" to Your Blog, A Tutorial (for blogspot only)

Have you ever read blogs where there it looks like there is a handwritten signature at the end of the post? I think they are pretty neat. They add a fun and personal touch to a blog. I found My Live Signature awhile back and started to add it to my blog but couldn't decide on which font to use. After chatting with another blogger today, I decided that it was time to take this off of my list of things to do and finally get it done.

I found a few other signature sites, but I like My Live Signatures the best. I think is the easiest to use with the most choices. In fact the reason it took me so long to get it done was because I couldn't decide what font I wanted to use. In the end I went in a completely different direction after finding one with Hearts on it. I am a sucker for Hearts :)

Since I use a blogspot blog, this tutorial is only for blogspot, I can tell you nothing about any other blog HTML.

To start out, visit the My Live Signature website and follow the simple directions to create your own personal signature.

You can customize the colors to match your blog. I used the same color that my text is here. I just went into my blog layout and good the color code from there.

When you are done, it will give you several different options on how to add the signature to different blogs. I like to add the HTML myself to make sure I get it exactly where I want it. It doesn't really say where the signature will be installed onto my blog, so I grabbed the code and did it myself. To choose your own code, on the My Live Signature website, after you have created your own "handwritten signature" click on the tab that says My Sigs. From there you can generate your own code to add to your blogspot blog.

Before starting any HTML work on your blog make sure that you back up and download your blog to your hard drive. If you mess anything up, you have not lost your blog!!

After you get your code for your signature you will need to go into your Layout, Edit HTML and click on Expand Widget Templates.

If you want your signature to be on the bottom left of your post you will need to find where it says:

    < div class='post-header-line-1'/>

    < div class='post-body entry-content'>
      < data:post.body/>

(It will look a little different, I have added a few extra spaces it it because I am not sure if it will change this post or not, I have added the space after the first < you can copy and paste my code here, but make sure that you delete that space. )

After you find that, you will need to find this:

      < div style='clear: both;'/> < !-- clear for photos floats -->
    < /div>

Add a few lines in between those two sections and that is where you are going to add the code from My Live Signature. I also like to add a paragraph < p> and a break < br> to give separation at the end of the post. You can mess around with adding paragraphs or breaks to customize your blog. don't forget to close the p or br with a / at the end of the code or it will not work.

After you add the code, this is how it will be placed:

If you want the signature placed on the right hand side of the blog post you need to add extra code to shift it over. You can add this code:

< div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;">

and don't forget to close it at the end of the signature code.

< /div>

The script will look like this:

And the signature will look like this on the post:

I hope this helps you! I have been helping other bloggy friends with all sorts of different HTML assistance, and some of them I have explained several times, so I thought I would publish my knowledge. This is my first published tutorial, so I hope I haven't left anything out. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them. If you are really excited about this tutorial and feel the need to thank me for my time with a donation, I would be more than happy to accept it...

Follow up to Request of Proclaimation For Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week

Last night I was talking to Will about this, and realized that the General Assembly is meeting next week. For some reason, I was thinking the were meeting with the new Governor after the inauguration in a few weeks. Honestly, I never thought I would think about when the General Assembly would meet and rush to make sure that my elected officials had a request from me in their hands while sitting there. Every day I see another way that Congenital Heart Defects has changed my life, and everyday I am amazed at the things I do because of it.

The regular session convenes Wednesday, January 13, so I decided to send it to our Delegate and Senator as well as Governor Kaine by email instead of putting it in the mail. With any luck we will hear back from them in the next few weeks. I thought I would at least get an auto generated email response from them, but so far I haven't even gotten that. I am going to have to talk myself out of checking my email every 10 minutes to see if they even take the time to write back to me. And since it is after 5 on a Friday, I am not expecting too much...but I still can't stop myself from looking.

Thankful Thursday

Oops! Boy did I let today get away from me! Brianne just tweeted at me asking me about Thankful Thursdays. I was so busy with homeshool lessons and working on some things for Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, that the day slipped away. I have had a rough week recovering from Christmas vacation and getting back into the swing of things...of course that is no excuse for a grown woman to completely forget what day of the week it is...but that is my story and I am sticking to it.

So first off, I am Thankful to Brianne for bring my slacker ways to my attention and I owe this edition of Thankful Thursdays to her :)

I am more than Thankful that today is Thursday and that there is only one more day left in this sloooooow and painful week. I will be even more Thankful if the snow keeps falling through the night and E Nut gets a snow day tomorrow.

She Nut finally cut her first tooth! She has been a soggy, drooling mess for weeks and I have been looking at the white tooth through her gums for just as long. Today she grabbed onto my finger and bit down with her little fang tooth and let me know it was there. So Thankful for the simple memories of a baby girls first tooth.

I have been wanting a pair of Uggs for years, but never really said anything about them because, 1 they are way too expensive and 2 I heard once that my husband hates them. So I confessed last month how much I really love them and was adding it my my Must Have List...you know for the future, something to work for. Even though my husband hates the Ugg style, he got me an off brand pair of the cutest Ugg style boots for Christmas! Unfortunately, they were too small. When I went to exchange them, there were none in my size so we had to have them shipped in from another store....I bet you know where I am going with this. I got the call today and my new boots were in! And really, that is one of the contributing factors that distracted me from getting Thankful Thursdays up at a reasonable hour this morning. And to make my new boots even more exciting, it started snowing a few hours ago, so when I ran out to make the exchange, I got to put my new ones on and wear them out of the store, into the snow. Perfect! I felt like a little girl getting new shoes, so giddy.

I know that might be a silly thing to be Thankful for, but after a week like I have had this week, I drove out of away from the store, with a new pair of boots that fit just right, and the radio up......yep, just like the Zack Brown Band song Chicken Fried. Cheesy, I know, but that is what I was singing in my head as I drove home in the snow.

As always, I am Thankful for my happy, healthy, wild little beasties that run around my house all day long driving me crazy, I am Thankful that my husband has a job, we have a roof over our heads and for our wonderfully supportive group of friends and family and all the ways they help us.

I know it is late, and I don't know if anyone is ready to participate or not, but I am going to set up the MckLinky anyways...

Have fun!

My Letter Requesting a Proclamation from Governor Kaine Concerning Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week

I actually got the main body of this letter from the the Congenital Heart Information Network (CHIN) and added my own personal touch. If you would like to send a request of a Proclamation to your governor, CHIN has a basic letter that you can use along with a rough draft of a proclamation that you can send along with the letter. Please do this as soon as possible so that CHIN can include your state's proclamation on their website. Thanks!

Dear Honorable Governor Kaine,

Families of children with congenital and acquired heart disease, adults with congenital heart defects, and the professionals who work with them are joining forces to have February 7-14th proclaimed in all fifty states as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week." As a resident of this great state of Virginia, I am requesting that you help us reach our goal by making an executive proclamation declaring this special week in February.

I am the parent of a child with a rare and complex Congenital Heart Defect (CHD). He is only 20 months old and has already had 2 open heart surgeries and will need one more before he is 3 years old.  Did you know that CHD's affect 1 in 100 newborns? That makes CHD's not only the number one birth defect, but also the number one killer of newborns and infants.

For more information about CHD Awareness week participants and activities, please see www.tchin.org/aware. In our effort bring awareness to CHD's on a National Level, I would be extremely proud if my state would participate in making February 7-14th a special week to recognize people born with heart defects, to remember loved ones who lost their battle to CHD, and to honor the dedicated health professionals who work with us. I have included a rough draft of what I imagine a proclamation would look like.

I would be most grateful if you could send the proclamation as soon as possible so that we can make plans for promotion and celebration during the month of February. Our state's participation in this event will have a profound impact on thousands of families and individuals. I thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

Lisa Curcio,
Member of Mended Little Hearts of Charlottesville, Virgnina

Yes, it is an Easy Bake Oven!

Last month I did one of Mama M's Five Questions Fridays, one of the questions had to do with favorite childhood toys. My Easy Bake Oven was one of my favorite toys and here is the post that tells all about it. That post started a conversation that started here, spilled over to Twitter and the BlogFrog. After 4 boys, I have a tendency to get a bit over excited when it comes to buying things for my baby girl. She turned 5 months old just before Christmas and the topic of conversation was whether or not She Nut was too young for an Easy Bake Oven. While the general consensus was that she is indeed, not to young for a toy oven in which to make tasty little cakes and browines, I decided I would wait until next year to get the coveted Easy Bake Oven.

My mother on the other hand, after reading said post, decided the Easy Bake Oven was the perfect gift for baby girl!

In my last post, I asked if anyone could guess what special gift baby girl got for Christmas.

Rhonda was the only one who guess it, and while I wish I could send her some sweet tiny little cakes made with love, the fact is She Nut is still eating mush, so we wont be warming up the Easy Bake Oven any time soon. You can check out Rhonda's blog A Glimpse of the Lyle Life and read about her adorable family.

Fun Friday Photos Christmas Vacation

I wanted to get a good picture of the presents that I wrapped from different recycled materials, but I completely forgot. Santa brings presents in Santa paper, and there were presents under the tree from my parents, my brother and from Will's dad and Katy. This year, I used a lot of recycled packing paper and decorated with crayons and tulle leftover from our wedding. I posted more ideas for saving money on wrapping paper in this post on my frugal living blog.

Christmas morning.

When I was a kid, we used to tear open the presents first thing in the morning.
Now, before we open presents I make the kids eat breakfast.
They get to look at their stocking goodies & eat.
My brother is holding down the fort while I get some caffeine in me.

Legos and Leapster video games of course.

As usual, Wee Nut is buckled into the highchair.
He was happy to sit and snack while opening presents.
Go Yankees!

She Nut is teething and always sucking on her thumb.
She has one tooth that we can see cutting through.

E Nut loves baseball and got his first bat from Grandpa.

Wing Nut loves to fish with his dad and they have been playing this fun game.
It came with a cool little fishing pole attachment for Wii controller.
Go Yankees!

Little Nut Nut and Wee Nut will be sharing a room when the addition is done.
Little Nut Nut got a tent and Wee Nut got the connecting tunnel.
Go Yankees!

We tried to get several pictures of Wee Nut in his tunnel.
He was moving much to fast and having way too much fun to try to stop him.
This is one of my favorite pictures of him.

She Nut, fast asleep in her bassinet, all this fun is so exhausting.
Of course she is sucking her thumb.

Little Nut Nut sporting his Saving Little Hearts "My brother is a Survivor" T-Shirt.

Wee Nut wearing his "I'm a Heart Surgery Survivor" T-Shirt.
He was too busy watching Elmo to even look at the camera.

She Nut got something special for Christmas...
Can anyone guess what it is?
